Stop crying on yourself!

  by Valentina Fois

Recently I have learnt a new lesson, which I now want to share the outcome with you all. Hopefully I will motivate some of you not to give up on your dreams because you are having a bad time.

This was for me a lesson in sufferance and pain. It was a lesson about love and hope. I will not divulge details, as it is not my intention to bother you with my private life. All I can say is that recently my life changed radically and I have lost things and people that I have loved. I felt angry, sad, furious, blue, black and red again. I felt unable to cope with the events and restless, I was ready to give up and watch the pain take over me. Then I thought about how much I love my job and how much I have been working hard over the past few years and suddenly I felt ok. I thought about all the amazing colleagues, artists and visitors that I have met so far in my journey and I felt lucky. Of course the pain did not disappear but eventually it dulled; I stood up tall and I have faced my problems. I did that not because I am stronger or better than others, I did that because I have remembered myself, who I was and what I wanted.
Here I have written for you a few things that I wish someone had told me before and others that wise people told me long time ago and even today I still found them so true.

1 Stop crying on yourself!
(Wise tip from my Grandma)
First of all, it’s always natural to think that you are the only one who is living a difficult situation. However, the world is full of people with troubles and yours are not smaller or bigger than the other people’s problems, yours are just more painful because they belong to you.
Stop crying on yourself and look around you, there will be other people keen to share their experiences with you, you might find new friends while you are suffering.

2 Everything happens for a reason
(My mum, and well, life in general)
What happens to you has always a reason. Now I’m sure you will say, ‘yes sure!’ But I will answer you, ‘yes it is true, you cannot see it because at this moment you are suffering, but even suffering brings along positive change:

a You will be stronger by learning from that experience

b You will know yourself better because you will question who you are and what is around you

c You will discover new friends and sometimes say goodbye to people whom are not close to you any longer. It is not a shame to understand that you and your friends don’t share the same interests any longer

d Seasons will pass by and you will understand that you are actually grateful for that sufferance; of course it was hard and maybe even unfair but it has forced you to move forward and push your limits once more, and come out on the other side.

3 Always remember who you are
Always remember who you are and your values. What do you like? Think about anything that makes you happy and rediscover again simple pleasures. For me it was important to think about all the sacrifices I have made to get the gallery together, all the joy I feel in commencing a new project and the excitement of meeting new people. I thought about all my dreams, the ones I have already achieved and the ones that are yet to come. Most importantly I am thinking about my family and the great support that I have received.

Take advantage of your pain, use it to develop; see this period as the perfect opportunity to question yourself. I strongly believe that we can learn from any types of situation and pain is not excluded!

Don’t repress your feelings. Do you feel like crying? Then do it! Be truth to yourself and the way you manifest your emotion. Remember, that often sufferance is a process that you need to go through on your own, respect this experience and wisely decide with whom you would like to share it.

I hope that to share this with you will help you to keep going during darker times. They are dark only until the light will come again.
