Sanja Ivekovic : Unknown Heroine
18.12.2012
One of the most recently anticipated exhibitions has just opened at the South London Gallery in collaboration with Calvert 22, ‘SANJA IVEKOVIC: UNKNOWN HEROINE’. Ivekovic is an established Croatian artist, however this retrospective will be her first exhibition in the UK. Curated by Lina Džuverović, this exhibition presents works in the varying mediums of Ivekovic’s practice from collage and film to performance and installation. Working within times of political unrest, she addresses issues of the female identity (being one of the first Croatian artists to call herself a feminist), consumerism and identity. Using herself as a starting point for such concepts her work is not only personal it also asserts universal notions of gender and the political. This exhibition is well worth going to see, not only for the historical relevance but also for the stimulating and original perspective on feminism, sociology and identity that Ivekovic successfully executes.
